CNN\u2019s\u00a0Don Lemon<\/a>\u00a0gave first lady\u00a0Melania Trump<\/a>\u00a0credit for\u00a0defending NBA star LeBron James<\/a>\u00a0after President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0attacked James and Lemon on Twitter, but he also warned viewers that they shouldn\u2019t read too much into her message.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also have to remember that she was a\u00a0birther<\/a>, too,\u201d Lemon said, referencing the racist questioning of former President Barack Obama\u2019s U.S. citizenship. Trump built his political career by peddling the debunked conspiracy theory.<\/p>\n

The current first lady indeed\u00a0defended her husband\u2019s birtherism<\/a>\u00a0during an interview with Joy Behar in 2011. \u201cIt\u2019s not only Donald who wants to see it,\u201d she said, referring to Obama\u2019s birth certificate. \u201cIt\u2019s American people who voted for him and who didn\u2019t vote for him. They want to see that.\u201d\u00a0She added that the birth certificate that Obama did release was \u201cnot a birth certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president\u00a0lashed out<\/a>\u00a0Friday night after Lemon interviewed James about the NBA star\u2019s work\u00a0opening a new public school<\/a>\u00a0for at-risk youth.\u00a0During the interview, James said Trump uses sports \u201cto divide us\u201d and that the president enables racists.<\/p>\n

Trump soon responded by insulting both men\u2019s intelligence in a\u00a0tweet<\/a>\u00a0Lemon called \u201cdisgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do believe that this president is a racist and I don\u2019t say that lightly,\u201d Lemon said in light of Trump\u2019s tweet. \u201cWhat he is playing on with me and LeBron James is an old racist trope about black and African-Americans and people of color being of inferior intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soon after Trump sent his message, the first lady\u00a0released a statement<\/a>\u00a0through her spokesperson in which she broke with the president and praised James for his philanthropic work.<\/p>\n

Lemon interviewed James about the I Promise School, which the NBA player opened in partnership with his foundation and Akron Public Schools in Ohio. The school, which opened to 240 third- and fourth-graders last week, has an unusual approach, focusing on emotional well-being for both students and their families.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
